Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, described the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM Friday night.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Another individual, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
